Background - Tannen Music, Inc.

Tannen Music, Inc. (BMI): Tannen Music, which was founded by Nat Tannen in 1944, was one of the original founding members of BMI. Today the company is owned by Nat's three sons, Paul, Michael and Peter. Until his death in 1962, Nat Tannen was one of the leading independent music publishers in New York. While working for Bourne Music in the 40's, he picked up rights to songs such as "San Antonio Rose" and "Steel Guitar Rag". He was one of the pioneers of the music print business when he formed Keys Music. He was one of the first New York publishers to discover the wealth of music being written and recorded in Nashville. Accordingly, the catalogue, which contains 477 compositions, is particularly well represented by classic country songs, most of which were written and recorded in the late 40's and 50's.

Some of the better known country titles are "Mountain Dew", "I'm Not Broke But I'm Badly Bent ", "Good Morning Judge " (also an R&B hit), "I've Just Got to See You Once More", "Little Girl and the Dreadful Snake", "Pardon Me for Loving You", "Sorrow and Pain" and "Too Many Times". Some of the country artists who have recorded songs in the catalogue are Red Foley, Hank Snow, The Davis Sisters, Bill Monroe, The Tractors, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Grandpa Jones, Little Jimmie Dickens, Goldie Hill, George Jones, Chet Akins, Willie Nelson, Buck Owens, Mother Maybelle Carter, Elton Britt, Peewee King, and The Stanley Brothers. With the new popularity of "traditional" country music, the catalogue is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance. About 75% of the catalogue is country, while the balance is primarily pop with some gospel and R&B. These songs were recorded in the 50's and early 60's [does this contradict earlier statement that most songs were written in 40's and 50's?] by artists that include The Penguins, Johnny Tillotson, George Beverly Shea, The Rhythm Rockers, Wynonie Harris, Art Mooney, Ruth Brown & Clyde McPhatter, Tampa Red, Stuart Hamblen, The Swannee River Boys and Janis Martin.
